Thursday 22nd August
This morning we checked out of our Auberge and drive around to the marina to talk to the guy in charge of selling ex-rental boats for Le Boat, a large worldwide hire boat company. After every summer season they sell off a few older boats.
Although we really like the idea of a proper steel boat, the fact is that the exrental fibreglass boats are much more affordable and we can get some changes done inside to create the sleeping spaces we want.

We looked at one that would fit the bill and when the summer is over here we’ll know exactly what is for sale and for how much.

After that meeting we had a quick look at another marina and had some lunch at a canal side restaurant. The Menu Fixe Prix for lunch is a real bargain in most places. For about 12€ you can get three courses which fill you up and then one only needs a salad for dinner.
Today I had pâté de canard (duck liver pâté) for entree, coq au vin for main and then tarte tartin for dessert. Alan had the quiche followed by calmar (obviously calamari) and chocolate mousse. Bargain 🙂

Later on we drove to Dole, a gorgeous historic town at the edge of the Jura region only 30 minutes drive from St Jean-de-Losne. It’s where Louis Pasteur was born and it dates back to the Middle Ages.

It is also where the Nichols Hire Boats sell their exrental boats and we had a look on board some of their larger boats which have great indoor/outdoor living areas but all the cabins are forward which on a boat can be a bit too close living! They are worth considering though.

We found a hotel in the middle of Dole, Hotel de la Cloche, and are having a rest before going for a look around this beautiful town. The canal de Rhone au Rhin runs through Dole, as does the Doubs river. Dole has a 500 year old bell tower and a lot of the town has been preserved.

About khodges2013

Alan and I divide our time between our apartment in Christchurch, New Zealand, and our 11.5m Dutch Cruiser, Silver Fern, on the canals in France. We started out hiring and eventually bought our boat in 2014. The two summers lifestyle is wonderful and we feel very lucky!
