Inaugural trip up the Saone River

ImageImageToday is the day. We have paid our account at the Capitanerie (which was a massive amount before a few issues were discussed between the Capitanerie and our boat broker by phone and now it is slightly less massive), we have a new bottle of gas and we have taken the rental car back to Macon, albeit not quite in the pristine state it was originally. We haven’t  managed to buy any bikes yet.

We have provisions and we are ready to set sail, so to speak. Today is the day we find out just how the boat handles, it being 10 tonnes of steel. Yesterday we bought some more ropes, polypropylene which is much easier to handle when in the locks.

Here are some pics from the last few days…

Our next stop will be where the Seille River meets the Saone. We are planning to head up the Seille all the way to Louhans which is about 30kms and then back again. This will take a few days but hey, we’re on holiday. Not sure of the internet abilities up there as it sounds very rural. Wish us luck:)

As for what I learnt in the last few days: always get the full excess on car rental insurance. Sometimes it will pay for itself within minutes…that’s all I’m saying about that. Also if you are an enfant swan, don’t get between bread and your mere or pere because they will take you out! Darwins rules in action. Lastly think of Mondays as Sundays in France. Things are closed on Mondays. That’s it.

C’est ca.

Allez, we are off.

About khodges2013

Alan and I divide our time between our apartment in Christchurch, New Zealand, and our 11.5m Dutch Cruiser, Silver Fern, on the canals in France. We started out hiring and eventually bought our boat in 2014. The two summers lifestyle is wonderful and we feel very lucky!

Sounds like a real adventure, love the pics, would love to see what you could do with a good camera……need more goss about the car? Sounds like you are getting to grips with the local “culture” ha ha. Have fun 🙂

We have a Sony version of a GoPro which we clamped to the boat and used to video our cruise. Should be fun to watch back, especially where I had a chat with the lock keeper. In French. Yay! As for the car, well the less said the better!

Hey guys, glad to hear you are finally on your way. Hope there are no unexpected surprises along the way, but I guess that is all part of the adventure. Know you are limited with the internet access but would love to see some photos of your boat, inside and out – any chance??? You may or may not still be getting my friends Sally and Tonys blog but the too have been on the Saone, now on the Petit Saone. Maybe you will cross paths? Keep a look out for them on their boat Sable. Looking forward to the next installment. Debbie x

Hi guys. As we are from the school of Fake It Til You Make It, we are learning a lot as we go. Now know that you have to put some power on in order to get the battery alarm to shut up! I will post some other pics of the boat today if I can. Thanks for reading 🙂
