Wow. What an interesting morning we have had.
The Louhans Monday market is famous for its livestock, in particular the Bresse chickens. I may have mentioned them before 😊
It turned out that today was an especially busy market as it as a public holiday and there was a rather large travelling fair in town. When I say it was busy I mean it was BUSY! Think 1000 people, scorching heat, dusty walk ways and squawking livestock. The senses reeling, we walked from one end to the other, in the sweltering heat. Those poor animals were jammed into cages in the sun, some without water. There were roosters crowing, hens clucking, dogs barking and goats looking really ****ed off to be there. We saw dogs for sale, an enormous variety of poultry as well as the usual fruit and veges, cured meats, olives and all kinds of bread and pastries. And of course miles and miles of clothing stalls.
There was leather stalls, saddle stalls, a grandfather clock stall (I kid you not). All in the sizzling heat. I especially liked the rotisserie chickens with the potatoes cooking underneath, soaked in the juices. But it is way too hot for that. How the guy who was cooking them didn’t faint into a heap I do not know.
And also The Fair has come to town. It has been going since we arrived on Friday. Lots of the good ole “Roll Up Roll Up” (whatever that is in French). There’s the Ghost Train and the Crazy House ride, the roller coasters and dodgems. It’s all happening. And it continues to happen well into the small hours.
The temperature reading on the thermometer on our deck said 44° this afternoon. The forecast is still for thunderstorms but so far it’s just been hot, hot with a hot wind, hotter and then mind numbingly hot.
Don’t hate me Christchurch. I know the weather there is crap. Hope it clears up soon. Wish we could halve the temps, 22° for you and 22° for us…🐓🐓🐓
