Or in our case, river. Alan’s foot is not back to normal yet but he’s determined to head off today so after refuelling, filling up the water tanks, topping up the wifi Domino and saying au’revoir to the guys at the Capitanerie in Chalon, we headed back out onto the Saone and upstream.

We were keen to stay tonight in Gergy but there wasn’t enough room on the pontoon for us. There would have been if a smaller boat had moved forward but there was no one on board and I’m not sure of the etiquette in moving someone’s boat without their knowledge. So we moved off and continued up to Verdun-sur-le-Doubs. The Saone was very quiet today. We only saw one commercial barge…

I had been told that Verdun-sur-le-Daubs wasn’t worth stopping at but I disagree entirely. Love this mooring. Here’s the history in a nutshell. The Romans established a port here in the first century AD and has been a busy waterways capital ever since. Until recently. Right now it seems very quiet. The port, which is a pontoon with a Capitanerie, is right in front of the town square with ramparts of the old town and a steep access ramp. Across from the port is the île du Château which has been made into a public space for everyone to enjoy. Very peaceful and fabulous views back to the boat. Speaking of the boat, we really need to change the name! No one can say Wig Wam. In Chalon at the. Capitanerie the German or Swiss receptionist called it Vig Varm which I quite liked if said with a certain stern Nazi’ish tone. Ja!

The last pic was the view from the bar where Alan had a very nice beer and I had a citron presse which was extremely tart and very delicious. Inside the boys were watching the World Cup. I can’t believe we aren’t in it. No NZ flags on the bunting. 😦 Ah well, there’s always Le Rugby!
